What is subluxation? The term "subluxation" is used by doctors of chiropractic to depict the altered position of the vertebra and subsequent functional loss, which determines the location for the spinal manipulation. "Subluxation" has been defined medically as "...a partial abnormal separation of the articular surfaces of a joint."(1)
Subluxation is considered a complex of functions of the biomechanical and physiological dynamics of contiguous structures which can cause neural disturbances; meaning when two vertebrae, next to each other, don't move correctly, the result is miscommunication of the nerves and soft tissue dysfunction. |
What causes subluxation?
There are many causes of subluxation which can include stress, trauma, overuse, inactivity, and even environmental influences. These causes contribute to dysfunction in the musculoskeletal system and lead to the misalignment of the spinal column.
Why correct subluxation?
Uncorrected subluxation can lead to more dysfunction, degeneration, and less than optimal health.
How is subluxation corrected?
Chiropractors are specialists and specifically educated in the detection and treatment of subluxation. Chiropractic adjustments are delivered by applying corrective pressure to the spine in a specific direction and location. Most subluxations have been present for years and may require multiple visits in order for the body to accept and maintain the proper alignment. Under normal circumstances, chiropractic adjustments are painless. In cases of trauma, such as car accident, some discomfort may be experienced due to inflammation.
